Guillemot Kayak, Stripping the Hull Part 1 |
|
|
|
I started stripping the hull the first week of February 2002. |

The internal strong back was constructed out of 1/2" ply. The work area under the strong back was handy during construction. |

Here's a picture of the forms mounted to the internal strongback. |

A dozuki pull saw saw used to cut out the pattern. |

I decided to make a pattern using Spanish cedar in the middle of the kayak in the keel area. After stripping this area, I clamped some strips in the pattern that I liked. A pencil was used to mark a cut line. |

The western red cedar strips are run to within 1/8"-1/4" of the pattern. |

After cutting out the pattern, straight western red cedar strips were run along the sides of the hull. Notice that I didn't try to bend to the strips in the bow. |

After the strips were run on both sides of the hull, I needed to fill in the gap along the pattern. |

Running strips parallel to the waterline worked out great, especially in the bow and stern. Note the strip I ran to mark the shear. |
