Coaming Construction, Part 2
Bias cut fiberglass cloth Wet out fiberglass
After the fillet dried, bias cut strips of 6 ounce fiberglass
cloth was wrapped around the coaming.
The fiberglass was wet out with epoxy.  An extra layer of
fiberglass was added along the rear quarter of the
coaming riser.  This area will receive the most stress
when entering the kayak.
Scoring the glass
Removing excess fiberglass
The fiberglass was scored with a utility knife along the
edge of the strapping tape.
After scoring, the fiberglass is peeled from the tape.  A
clean edge remains.
Height of riser marked
Excess cut off with jigsaw
The height of the coaming riser is marked with a Sharpie.
The excess has been cut off with a jigsaw.  A fairing
board will be used to smooth the cut.
Area faired
Last fill coat
A fill coat of epoxy has been applied to the fiberglass and
allowed to dry.  A random orbital sander and a scraper
were used to smooth the fiberglass and epoxy.  It's easier
to fair this area at this time rather than after the lip has
been added.
One more fill coat has been added to the fiberglass to
smooth the transition to the deck.
